Metcalfe County Hornets 2009-2010 Band Handbook
PERFORMING GROUPS
A. Marching Band
-The marching band will occur during the first three to four months of
school. The ensemble will meet during school and Tuesday and Thursday after
school from 3:15-5:30PM. There will also be an afterschool rehearsal on the
Friday of football games. Performance events will include all home football
games, 5-6 marching competitions, and the Christmas Parade. Additional events
may include away football tournament games, regional and state marching band
competitions, and any additional parades. All members of the band will be
expected to march at all events. All members of the marching band must
participate in concert band.
B. Color Guard
-The color guard is a vital part of the marching band. This group should
not be seen as a separate group from the marching band. Members will be selected
through an audition process that will occur in late April. If selected, you will
be expected to fully participate in marching band. If you play an instrument, I
encourage you to participate as a player in concert band.
C. Concert Band
-The concert band is the primary and most important performing group at
Metcalfe County High School. Concert Band will begin after marching season is
over and will last the rest of the school year. Rehearsals will occur mainly
during school. There may be additional after school rehearsals to prepare for
upcoming events. Performing events will include 2-3 concerts, commencement
ceremony, and district band festival. Travel may occur every 2-3 years to
performance events, such as the KMEA conference. All members of the concert band
must participate in marching band.
D. Pep Band
-The pep band will consist of members of the concert band. The basketball
season will last from December to March. A schedule will be given to each
student as soon as possible. Each student will be required to perform at all of
the games. More details are included under pep band rules.
E. Small Ensembles.
-If you would like to form a small performance ensemble, please talk with
me and I will be more than happy to work with you.
GENERAL BAND ROOM/REHEARSAL RULES
1. There will absolutely be no food or drinks allowed in the band room.
Bottled water is allowed. Chewing gum is also not allowed.
2. Electronic devices such as cell phones will not be allowed in rehearsal. If
you are caught with one, I will take it from you and turn it in to the office
(See school rules)
3. Rehearsal will begin once I step in front of the stand. No talking will be
allowed at this time. If you are not in your seat once I step on the podium, you
will be counted as tardy.
4. Always raise your hand when asking a question. Never yell in class.
5. Only play on your own instrument.
6. Respect others and their personal property
7. Students should check the board daily for the rehearsal agenda.
8. NO ONE is allowed in my office without permission.
9. All other school rules will be followed.
10. 100 percent attitude is a must.
CONSEQUENCES
Consequences will occur in this order. Depending on the violation, some
steps can be skipped.
1st offense- Verbal warning/Conference with director
2nd-4th offenses- Parental Conference and/or write-up
5th offense- Removal from band
CELL PHONES
No student will be allowed to have a cell phone out in class for any
reason. If a student has a cell phone out in class, I will take it from that
student and it will be turned in at the office, even if this is a first offense.
The student will also receive a write-up. If a student has a cell phone out
during an afterschool rehearsal, I will take it from them during rehearsal.
GRADING
Grades will be based on the following:
Test Grades (50%)-This includes all performances, playing tests, and written
tests
Quiz Grades (30%)-This includes all afterschool rehearsals and any written
assignments
Classroom Grades (20%) - This includes daily rehearsals, participation in class,
etc..
The grading scale will be as follows:
All afterschool rehearsals-25 points
All football games and competitions-100 points
Daily grade-25 points (includes being on time, having pencil, etc...)
Concerts-100 points
Pep Band Games-50 points
Playing/written tests-100 points
Portfolio piece-100 points
IF YOU ARE NOT IN YOUR SEAT WITH INSTRUMENT BY THE TARDY BELL, YOU WILL BE
COUNTED AS TARDY.
-If a student misses a test due to an excused absence, they will have up to a
week to make it up. If a performance is missed, they will have to do a project
to make up the grade. If a student misses a test due to an unexcused absence,
they will not have the opportunity to make up the points. The student will
receive a zero.
EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit can count towards the total points. Extra credit can be
achieved by the following:
Audition for all-district—5 pts.
Making all-district—10 pts.
Audition for all-state—10 pts.
Making all-state—25 pts.
Acceptance into any university clinic (i.e. WKU Honors Band)—10 pts.
Participate in solo/ensemble—5 pts.
Earning a distinguished in solo/ensemble—10 pts.
Attending a music event not at the high school—10 pts.
-NOTE: I will require a one page summary of the event and the program.
CLASSROOM MATERIALS
1. All students are required to bring a pencil to rehearsal daily.
2. All students must bring the following:
Woodwinds-a minimum of 2 working reeds, cleaning swabs/rags, and cork grease
Brass-valve oil, slide oil, cleaning rags
Percussion-sticks/mallets, drum pad
3. All students must bring their music and method books daily. Each student is
responsible for their own materials.
MARCHING BAND PROCEDURES
A. Band Camp
Band camp is mandatory for all members of the marching band and color
guard. The following dates will be required:
July 14th-16th
Color Guard Mini-Camp (12:00PM-5:00PM)
-Color guard members must attend. You will learn the fundamentals of color
guard.
July 16th-17th
Percussion Mini-Camp (8:00AM-12:00PM)
-All percussionists must attend. You will be assigned parts during this time.
New Member Camp (8:00AM-12:00PM)
-All new members are required to attend the two days of camp. You will work on
marching fundamentals and music.
July 20th-24th, July 27th-31st
Band Camp (8:00AM-4:00PM)
-All members must attend band camp to be a participant in marching band. You
will be allowed to leave school for lunch. Lunch will be around 1 hour depending
on how hard you work.
RECOMMENDED ATTIRE/ITEMS FOR BAND CAMP REHEARSALS
*Light colored hat or visor
*Light colored short sleeve T-shirt (No tube tops or bikini tops)
*Light colored shorts
*Sun glasses
*White socks
*Light colored tennis shoes (sandals, flip-flops, clogs, or boots are not
permitted)
*Sun screen/insect repellent
*Gatorade/Water (This will be provided during rehearsals, but I recommend you
bring your own.)
*Any prescription medication
REQUIRED ITEMS FOR BAND CAMP REHEARSALS
*Instrument/Guard Equipment
*Music
*Pencils
*Supplies (such as valve oil, reeds, etc.)
*Flip Folder
All portions of band camp are mandatory for membership in the marching band. If
you must miss, I will need to talk directly with your parents.
A. Fees
For the band to pay for necessary things, such as music, uniform
cleaning, etc., a band fee of $75 will be assessed to all students. The money or
a payment plan will be due by the first day of band camp. If you cannot pay the
fee, please do not get discouraged. Please talk to me so we can make
arrangements.
B. After school rehearsal
After school rehearsals will occur from 3:15-5:30PM on Tuesdays and
Thursdays. There will also be rehearsals the Fridays of football games. Extra
rehearsals can be added. You will be notified in advance. All students will be
required to attend. Please schedule any driver’s tests, doctor’s appointments,
etc. on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday (if there is no football game). If you have
a conflict, please talk to me. If you work really hard during rehearsals, we may
finish early.
C. Attendance
You must be present at all rehearsals. Each rehearsal is 25 points. Each
performance
is 100 points. If you miss a rehearsal unexcused, you may not be able to perform
at
any performance during that week.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
-Death in family
-Marriage in family
-Doctor’s excuse
-Religious holiday
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
-Anything that is not included under excused absences. Work is definitely
unexcused.
-If you are suspended from school, you will have an unexcused absence.
D. Football Game Procedures
1. The band will meet in the band room in either the football shirt and
khakis or full
band uniform an hour and fifteen minutes before the game starts. The dress will
depend on the weather.
2. If you are not in full uniform, you may lose points.
3. We perform during pregame, during the game, and halftime. The band will
receive
a break during the third quarter. You can go to the bathroom during this time.
You
must be back by the 1:00 mark.
4. Always be ready to play.
5. Do not play your instrument unless the director tells you- our team could be
penalized.
6. All students must remain in the reserved section. Non-band students are not
allowed
in the band section.
7. We must stay for the whole game, no matter the weather conditions.
8. All music and flip folders are required.
9. Remember, you are a representative of the band, the school, and yourself.
10. If there is a good chance of rain, the band might not perform at the
football game.
This will be a last minute decision.
11. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO LEAVE UNTIL ALL EQUIPMENT IS UNLOADED
AND PLACED IN THE BAND ROOM
F. Marching Competition Procedures.
1. Students will be required to attend the continuity rehearsal. It will be
scheduled two
hours before the departure time.
2. Thirty minutes before departure time, students will load the equipment bus.
It is the
individual student’s responsibility to load their own instrument/equipment and
uniform.
3. After everything is loaded, all students will meet back in the band room for
a brief
meeting.
4. Please follow all bus rules. You are allowed to bring classwork. You may also
bring any listening devices, as long as you have a headset. Whatever the bus
driver
says goes.
5. When we get within five minutes of the school, quiet time will begin. At this
time,
all items must be put away. There will be no talking. All students must face
forward. If you choose not to follow the rules, you will sit at the front of the
bus
on the way back.
6. Once we arrive, the band hosts will give us important information. Once they
get
done, the band will get off the bus quietly.
7. Students will unload uniforms and equipment off the bus based on order. The
students will then form two single file lines and be escorted by the band
parents
to the changing room. Once you put on the uniform, you are allowed to place your
street clothes in the uniform bag. YOU MUST WEAR A WHITE T-SHIRT
(with sleeves) AND SHORTS UNDER THE UNIFORM. You may lose
points if you do not follow this rule.
8. After you finish changing, you can hang up your bag and get your instrument.
9. Do not play your instrument until I give you approval.
10. Students will travel to the warm-up site in a single file line.
11. After warm-up, we will form the parade block and march to the gate.
12. After the band is announced, the performance begins. HAVE FUN!!!
13. After performing, students will reload equipment and pick up uniform bags in
the
same process as before.
14. As a group, you will change into your street clothes-this is your official
band shirt
and blue jeans. You may lose points if you do not wear the items listed above.
15. After you finish changing, all parts of the uniform must be put back in
place. You
must have your uniform checked by either a band parent or myself once you are
finished.
16. You will be escorted to your seating area. Once everyone is seated, you will
be
allowed to get food and drink. Be back in the time allotted.
17. Please be respectful while other bands are performing. You may not leave
during a band’s performance.
18. During the award ceremony, you will be quiet and at parade rest. When the
announcement of our class begins, you will be called to attention by a
designated
band member. You must stay at attention until you are called to parade rest.
19. At the conclusion of the awards, the students, as a group, will travel back
to the
bus. No matter the result, our heads will be held high because we gave it our
all.
20. NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO LEAVE UNTIL ALL EQUIPMENT IS
UNLOADED AND PROPERLY STORED IN THE BAND ROOM.
21. You are responsible for your own instrument or equipment.
22. Go home and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

CONCERT BAND PROCEDURES
Concert Band will last from the end of marching season to the graduation
ceremony. There will be rehearsals during the marching band season. This band is
the most vital part of the band program. Rehearsals will occur during the school
day.
A. Grading

B. Concert Dress
Men- Button-up dress shirt, black or khaki pants, dress socks, and dress
shoes
Women- Button-up shirt or blouse, black or khaki dress pants or skirt (must be
at least
calf length, dress shoes. Any other attire will be considered unacceptable. If
you have
any special circumstances on the dress, please talk to me at least a week before
the
concert.
C. Participation in Extra Events
All-District- The auditions will be held at Warren East High School on
Nov. 14th and
At Warren Central on Nov. 21st 2008. There will be a small fee. I will let you
know
when the information becomes available. The All-District concert will occur the
first
weekend of January at WKU.
All-State- The audition site and day is TBA. You must be recommended at
all-district
to audition. Rehearsals will occur in Louisville Feb. 3-6, 2010. The concert
will occur
at the KMEA conference in Louisville on Feb. 6th.
WKU Honors Band Clinic- Acceptance will be made by ranking and
recommendation. I will automatically recommend anyone who has participated
in the past, seniors, anyone who is first chair, or anyone who has participated
in at
least all-district. If you are accepted, you will audition for band placement.
The band
boosters should be able to cover the fee. The date is January 21st-23rd.
Solo/Ensemble- The event will take place at Warren Central High School TBA. You
will perform a piece for a clinician. If you are interested, please talk to me.
I must
hear the performance before the event.
Concert Band Festival- Everyone will be required to participate. We will perform
2-3 pieces for a judging panel. Our goal is to receive a distinguished rating.
The
performance will take place TBA.

January 7-9- All-District at WKU

May 21st- Graduation Ceremony
NOTE: This date could change because of snow days. Graduation is required of all
students. There will be no exceptions.
PEP BAND PROCEDURES
All students are required to participate in pep band. The grade will
count as a performance grade.
A. Attire
The attire for all basketball games will be the pep band (football)
t-shirt and blue jeans. The blue jeans cannot have holes. You cannot wear
anything over the shirt. If you show up in something else, you will lose 25
points.
B. Game Procedures
-The band, and only the band, will sit in the designated area during the
1st, 2nd, and 4th
quarter.
-The band will be on break during the third quarter. You will be allowed to get
food or
use the restroom. You must be back by the 1:00 mark.
-The band must be ready to play at ALL TIMES.
-Show school spirit. I want you to be the loudest fans in the gym. Please do not
get
out of hand. HAVE FUN!!!!
-If any behavior gets out of control, you can be removed from the game and
receive a
zero.
C. Tournament
-All students will be required to play in all district, regional, and
state tournament
games.
MISCELLANEOUS
A. Private Lessons
All students are recommended to take private lessons. If you are
interested, please talk
to me. I will be able to give you names and numbers of the people who play your
instrument.
B. Reeds/Supplies
If you need any supplies, such as reeds or valve oil, you may purchase
them from me.
I will need the money up front. Due to gas prices, Royal Music cannot come out
every
week. The prices for items are as follows:
Reeds: $2.00
Cork Grease/Valve Oil: $1.00
Drum Sticks: $7.00
C. Fund Raisers
Fund raising is an important part of the band. This is how band makes
their money.
There will be fund raising events throughout the school year. The money can go
towards such things as trips and fees.
D. Trips
The band will take a trip at least every other year. The trip may be a
performance at
the KMEA conference or a trip to King’s Island. Please note that if you have
been
suspended from school, you CANNOT attend. A permission slip must be signed by
your parent/guardian. If you miss a performance unexcused, you may not go on the
trip.
E. Academics
Please make the effort to do well in all of your classes. If you need any
help, please
feel free to contact me.
F. Suspension
If you get suspended from school for any reason during the school year,
you will be
prohibited from traveling with the band. You will be given an assignment to make
up
for the missed points.
G. Office usage
Students will not be allowed in the office unless a director is present.
If you need to
use the phone, just ask.
H. Practice
It is recommended that you practice at least an hour a day on your
instrument. If you
need to practice and you cannot at home, the band room will remain open until
4:00PM.
